Taqibat Common to Every Prayer

Origin: Mafatih al-Jinan (Shaykh Abbas al-Qummi), chapter on the ta'qibat after the obligatory prayers, drawing on Misbah al-Mutahajjid of Shaykh al-Tusi and al-Kaf'ami's Misbah; each recitation is traced there to the Imam who taught it.

Source: Arabic text, translation and transliteration from duas.org, which also hosts the recitation.

Categories: Daily, After Prayer

After the prayer, say “Allahu Akbar” three times, raising your hands to your ears each time, and recite the Tasbih of Fatima al-Zahra (a): “Allahu Akbar” 34 times, “Alhamdulillah” 33 times and “Subhanallah” 33 times. Then say:

la ilaha illa allahu

There is no god save Allah;

ilahan wahidan

One and Only God;

wa nahnu lahu muslimuna

and we are submissive to Him.

la ilaha illa allahu

There is no god save Allah

wa la na`budu illa iyyahu

and we worship none save Him,

mukhlisina lahu alddina

making our devotion sincere as in His sight,

wa law kariha almushrikuna

even though the polytheists may detest it.

la ilaha illa allahu

There is no god save Allah;

rabbuna wa rabbu aba'ina al-awwalina

(He is) Our Lord and the Lord of our fathers of old.

la ilaha illa allahu

There is no god save Allah;

wahdahu wahdahu wahdahu

Alone, alone, alone.

anjaza wa`dahu

He has truly fulfilled His promise,

wa nasara `abdahu

granted His servant victory,

wa a`azza jundahu

made powerful His soldiers,

wa hazama al-ahzaba wahdahu

and defeated the parties alone.

falahu almulku wa lahu alhamdu

So, sovereignty be His and praise be His.

yuhyi wa yumitu

He grants life and causes (others) to die,

wa yumitu wa yuhyi

and (then) causes to die and raises from the dead;

wa huwa hayyun la yamutu

while He is eternally ever-living and He never dies.

biyadihi alkhayru

All goodness is at His Hand,

wa huwa `ala kulli shay'in qadirun

and He has power over all things.

Then say:

I seek forgiveness of Allah; there is no god save Him, the Ever-living and Self-Subsisting; and to Him do I turn in repentance.

Then recite the dua “Allahumma ihdini min 'indik”:

allahumma ihdiny min `indika

O Allah, (please do) guide me to the true guidance of Yours,

wa afid `alayya min fadlika

pour upon me from Your grace,

wanshur `alayya min rahmatika

spread over me from Your mercy,

wa anzil `alayya min barakatika

and bring down upon me from Your blessings.

subhanaka la ilaha illa anta

Glory be to You; there is no god save You.

ighfir li dhunubi kulliha jami`an

(Please) forgive my sins—all of them entirely,

fa'innahu la yaghfiru aldhdhunuba kulliha jami`an illa anta

because none can forgive all sins entirely save You.

allahumma inni as'aluka min kulli khayrin ahata bihi `ilmuka

O Allah, I beseech You to grant me part of all good things that are encompassed by Your knowledge

wa a`udhu bika min kulli sharrin ahata bihi `ilmuka

and I seek Your protection against all evils that are encompassed by Your knowledge.

allahumma inni as'aluka `afiyataka fi umuri kulliha

O Allah, I beseech You to grant me wellbeing from You in all of my affairs

wa a`udhu bika min khizyi alddunya wa `adhabi alakhirati

and I seek Your protection against the disgrace of this world and the chastisement in the Next World.

wa a`udhu biwajhika alkarimi

I also seek protection of Your Noble Face,

wa `izzatika allati la turamu

Your invulnerable omnipotence,

and Your power that none can deter

min sharri alddunya wal-akhirati

against the evils of this world and the Next World,

wa min sharri alawja`i kulliha

the evils of all pains,

wa min sharri kulli dabbatin anta akhidhun binasiyatiha

and the evil of all moving creatures that You grasp from forelocks.

inna rabbi `ala siratin mustaqimin

Truly, my Lord is on a Straight Path.

There is neither strength nor power save with Allah, the All-high and All-great.

tawakkaltu `ala alhayyi alladhi la yamutu

I put my trust in the Ever-living (Lord) Who never dies.

walhamdu lillahi alladhi lam yattakhidh waladan

All praise be to Allah Who has not taken to Himself a son,

wa lam yakun lahu sharikun fi almulki

nor has He had any partner in sovereignty,

wa lam yakun lahu waliyyun mina aldhdhulli

nor does He need any to protect Him from humiliation.

wa kabbirhu takbiran

And magnify Him with all magnificence.

Before you leave your place of prayer, say the following ten times. A great reward is narrated for it, especially after the Fajr and Isha prayers, and at sunrise and sunset:

ash-hadu an la ilaha illa allahu

I bear witness that there is no god save Allah;

wahdahu la sharika lahu

(He is) One and Only; and there is no partner with Him;

ilahan wahidan

a Single God;

ahadan fardan samadan

One, Unique, and eternally Besought of all.

lam yattakhidh sahibatan wa la waladan

He has taken to Himself neither a wife nor a son.

Then recite “Subhana Allahi kullama sabbaha”:

subhana allahi kullama sabbaha allaha shay'un

All Glory be to Allah whenever Allah is glorified by things,

as exactly as Allah likes to be glorified,

and as it is suitable for the nobility of His Face and the might of His Majesty.

walhamdu lillahi kullama hamida allaha shay'un

All praise be to Allah whenever Allah is praised by things,

wa kama yuhibbu allahu an yuhmada

as exactly as Allah likes to be praised,

wa kama huwa ahluhu

as exactly as He is worthy of praising,

and as it is suitable for the nobility of His Face and the might of His Majesty.

There is no god save Allah whenever Allah’s Oneness in Godhead is professed,

wa kama yuhibbu allahu an yuhallala

as exactly as Allah likes His Oneness in Godhead to be professed,

wa kama huwa ahluhu

as exactly as He is worthy of being the One and Only God,

and as it is suitable for the nobility of His Face and the might of His Majesty.

wallahu akbaru kullama kabbara allaha shay'un

Allah is the Greatest whenever Allah’s Most Greatness is professed,

wa kama yuhibbu allahu an yukabbara

as exactly as Allah likes His Most Greatness to be professed,

and as it is suitable for the nobility of His Face and the might of His Majesty.

subhana allahi

All glory be to Allah;

walhamdu lillahi

all praise be to Allah;

wa la ilaha illa allahu

there is no god save Allah;

wallahu akbaru

and Allah is the Greatest

`ala kulli ni`matin an`ama biha `alayya

for all bounties that He has bestowed upon me

wa `ala kulli ahadin min khalqihi

and upon each and every being of His creatures,

mimman kana aw yakunu ila yawmi alqiyamati

including those who passed away and those who will exist up to the Resurrection Day.

allahumma inni as'aluka an tusalliya `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

O Allah, I beseech You to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

wa as'aluka min khayri ma arju

and I beseech You to grant me the best of what I hope

wa khayri ma la arju

and the best of what I have not included with my hopes.

wa a`udhu bika min sharri ma ahdharu

I also beseech You to protect me against the evil of what I anticipate

wa min sharri ma la ahdharu

and the evils of what I do not anticipate.

Then say the following three times. The Archangel Gabriel taught it to the Prophet Yusuf (a) in prison:

allahumma salli `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

O Allah, (Please) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

waj`al li min amri farajan wa makhrajan

cause all my affairs to arrive at a relief, prepare for me a way out,

and give me sustenance from whence I think and from whence I do not think.

Then hold your beard in your right hand, raise your left hand towards the sky, and say the following seven times:

yarabba muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

O Lord of Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad:

salli `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

(Please) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

wa `ajjil faraja ali muhammadin

and hasten the Relief of the Household of Muhammad.

Then, in the same position, say the following three times:

ya dhaljalali wal-ikrami

O Lord of Majesty and Honor,

salli `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

(Please) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

warhamni wa ajirni mina alnnari

have mercy upon me, and deliver me from Hellfire.

Imam Ali's (a) supplication after the five daily prayers, from al-Sahifa al-Alawiyya. Recite Surah al-Tawhid twelve times, then spread your hands and say:

allahumma inni as'aluka bismika almaknuni almakhzuni

O Allah, I beseech You in Your Name: the well-guarded, stored,

alttahiri alttuhri almubaraki

pure, immaculate, and blessed.

wa as'aluka bismika al`azimi

And I beseech You in Your Great Name

wa sultanika alqadimi

and Your eternal power.

ya wahiba al`ataya

O Donor of gifts!

wa ya mutliqa al-usara

O Releaser of captives!

wa ya fakkaka alrriqabi mina alnnari

O Deliverer of necks from the Fire!

as'aluka an tusalliya `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

I beseech You to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

wa an tu`tiqa raqabati mina alnnari

to deliver me from the Fire,

wa an tukhrijani mina alddunya saliman

to cause me leave this world free (from liabilities),

wa tudkhilani aljannata aminan

to allow me to Paradise with security,

wa an taj`ala du`a'i awwalahu falahan

and to make the beginning of my prayer successful,

wa awsatahu najahan

the middle of it a gain,

wa akhirahu salahan

and the end of it a prosperity.

innaka anta `allamu alghuyubi

Truly, You are the Knower of all unseen things.

From al-Sahifa al-Alawiyya, said after the obligatory prayers:

ya man la yashghaluhu sam`un `an sam`in

O He Who is not distracted by a sound from hearing another sound!

wa ya man la yughallituhu alssa'iluna

O He Who is not confused by the beseechers!

wa ya man la yubrimuhu ilhahu almulihhina

O He Who is not annoyed by the insistence of those who entreat Him persistently!

adhiqni barda `afwika

(Please do) Make me taste the nice flavor of Your pardon

wa halawata rahmatika wa maghfiratika

and the sweetness of Your mercy and forgiveness.

Then recite “Ilahi hadhihi salati sallaytuha”:

ilahi hadhihi salati sallaytuha

O Allah, This is my prayer that I have just offered

la lihajatin minka ilayha

on account of neither a need that You may have for it

wa la raghbatin minka fiha

nor a desire that You may have for it;

illa ta`ziman wa ta`atan

rather, it is only glorification of You, obedience to You,

wa ijabatan laka ila ma amartani bihi

and response to You to carry out what You have ordered me to do.

ilahi in kana fiha khalalun aw naqsun

O my God: If there is a defect or a deficiency in my prayer,

min ruku`iha aw sujudiha

whether in the genuflection or the prostration;

fala tu´akhidhni

then, (please) do not reproach me for it;

wa tafaddal `alayya bilqabuli wal-ghufrani

rather, confer upon me with Your acceptance (of it) and forgiveness (of me).

The supplication the Prophet (s) taught Imam Ali (a) for a strong memory:

subhana man la ya`tadi `ala ahli mamlakatihi

Glory be to Him Who does not treat the people of His realm with transgression!

Glory be to Him Who does not inflict on the inhabitants of the earth various sorts of torture!

subhana alrra'ufi alrrahimi

Glory be to the Affectionate, the Merciful!

O Allah, (please) fill my heart with illumination, discernment,

wa fahman wa `ilman

(faculty of) understanding, and knowledge.

innaka `ala kulli shay'in qadirun

Truly, You have power over all things.

Al-Kaf'ami, in his al-Misbah, gives this to be said three times after the obligatory prayers:

u`idhu nafsi wa dini

I seek for myself, my religion,

wa ahli wa mali

my family members, my possessions,

wa waladi wa ikhwani fi dini

my descendants, my brethren-in-faith,

wa ma razaqani rabbi wa khawatima `amali

all sustenance that my Lord has provided to me as sustenance, the results of my deeds,

wa man ya`nini amruhu

and whomever I may concern about,

billahi alwahidi

(I seek for all these) the protection of Allah, the Single,

al-ahadi alssamadi

the One, and the eternally Besought of all

alladhi lam yalid wa lam yulad

Who begets not, nor is He begotten;

wa lam yakun lahu kufwan ahadun

and the like of Whom there is none.

wa birabbi alfalaqi

And [I seek the protection of] the Lord of the dawn

min sharri ma khalaqa

from the evil of what He has created,

wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqaba

the evil of the utterly dark night when it comes,

wa min sharri alnnaffathati fi al`uqadi

the evil of those who blow on knots,

wa min sharri hasidin idha hasada

and the evil of the envious when he envies.

wa birabbi alnnasi

And [I seek the protection of] the Lord of men,

maliki alnnasi

the King of men,

ilahi alnnasi

the God of men,

min sharri alwaswasi alkhannasi

from the evil of the whisperings of the slinking (Satan),

alladhi yuwaswisu fi suduri alnnasi

who whispers into the hearts of men

mina aljinnati walnnasi

from among the jinn and the men.

The Prophet (s) said: whoever wishes that Allah will not show him his misdeeds on the Day of Resurrection, nor open their record, should say this after every obligatory prayer:

allahumma inna maghfirataka arja min `amali

O Allah, Truly, I hope for Your forgiveness more than I trust my deed.

wa inna rahmataka awsa`u min dhanbi

Your mercy is truly more expansive than my sin.

allahumma in kana dhanbi `indaka `aziman

O Allah, If my sin is grave in Your view,

fa`afwuka a`zamu min dhanbi

then Your pardon is greater than my sin.

allahumma in lam akun ahlan an ablugha rahmataka

O Allah, If I do not deserve to attain Your mercy,

farahmatuka ahlun an tablughani wa tasa`ani

then Your mercy is so liberal that it can reach and include me,

li-annaha wasi`at kulla shay'in

because it has included all things;

birahmatika ya arhama alrrahimina

[Let it be] by Your mercy; O most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

to Islam being my religion,

wa bimuhammadin salla allahu `alayhi wa alihi nabiyyan

to Muhammad—peace be upon him and his Household—being the Prophet,

wa bi`aliyyin imaman

to Ali being my leader,

a'immatan wa sadatan wa qadatan

being my Imams, masters, and leaders.

bihim atawalla wa min a`da'ihim atabarra'u

Only them should I follow and their enemies will I disavow.

Then say the following three times:

allahumma inni as'aluka al`afwa wal-`afiyata

O Allah, I ask You for amnesty, good health,

wal-mu`afata fi alddunya wal-akhirati

and wellbeing in this world as well as the Next World.

Then recite Surah al-Fatiha and these verses of the Qur'an, beginning with Ayat al-Kursi (2:255–257):

Allah—there is no god except Him—is the Living One, the All-sustainer. Neither drowsiness befalls Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that may intercede with Him except with His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they do not comprehend anything of His knowledge except what He wishes. His seat embraces the heavens and the earth and He is not wearied by their preservation, and He is the All-exalted, the All-supreme.Holy Quran 2:255

There is no compulsion in religion: rectitude has become distinct from error. So one who disavows fake deities and has faith in Allah has held fast to the firmest handle for which there is no breaking; and Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing.Holy Quran 2:256

Allah is the wali of the faithful: He brings them out of darkness into light. As for the faithless, their awliya are the fake deities, who drive them out of light into darkness. They shall be the inmates of the Fire, and they will remain in it [forever]Holy Quran 2:257.

The verses of bearing witness (3:18–19):

Allah, maintainer of justice, the Almighty and the All-wise, besides whom there is no god, bears witness that there is no god except Him, and [so do] the angels and those who possess knowledge.Holy Quran 3:18

Indeed, with Allah religion is Islam, and those who were given the Book did not differ except after knowledge had come to them, out of envy among themselves. And whoever denies Allah’s signs [should know that] Allah is swift at reckoning.Holy Quran 3:19

The verses of sovereignty (3:26–27):

The verses of subservience (7:54–56):

Then say these verses (37:180–182) three times:

subhana rabbika rabbi al-`izzati `amma yasifuna

Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of Honor, above what they describe.

wa salamun `ala almursalina

And peace be on the messengers.

walhamdu lillahi rabbi al`alamina

And all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.

From al-Sahifa al-Ridawiyya, a supplication for sustenance:

O He who possesses the needs of the seekers, and knows the inner thoughts of the silent

Likulli mas’alatin minka sam‘un hādirun, wa jawābun ‘atīd

For every petition You have a listening ear and a ready answer

Wa likulli sāmitin minka ‘ilmun bātinun muhīt

And for every silent one You have a hidden, encompassing knowledge

As’aluka bi-mawā‘īdika as-sādiqati, wa ayādīka al-fādhilati, wa rahmatika al-wāsi‘ah

I ask You by Your truthful promises, Your virtuous favors, and Your vast mercy

Wa sultānika alqāhiri, wa mulkika addā’imi, wa kalimātika attāmmāt

And Your overpowering authority, Your everlasting kingdom, and Your perfect words

Ya man lā tanfa‘uhu tā‘atu almutī‘īna, wa lā yadhurruhu ma‘siyatu al‘āsīn

O He whom the obedience of the obedient does not benefit, nor the disobedience of the sinners harm

Salli ‘alā Muhammadin wa ālihi, warzuqnī min fadhlika

Bless Muhammad and his family, and provide for me from Your grace

Wa a‘tinī fīmā tarzuqunī al‘āfiyata, birahmatika yā arhama arrāhimīn

And grant me wellbeing in what You provide for me, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful

Imam al-Ridha (a) taught this for times of weakness, trouble or weariness with misfortune. Go into prostration, put first your right cheek and then your left cheek on the ground, and each time say:

yaa mozilla kulle jabbaarin a’needin yaa o-i’zza kulle zaleelin qad wa haqqeqa balagha majhoodee fa-salle a’laa mohammadin wa aalehi wa farrij a’nnee.

O Humiliator of all tyrants! O Dignifier of all humble ones! I, swearing by You, have exerted all efforts; so, send blessings upon Muhammad and his Household and relieve me.

Imam al-Ridha (a) narrated from the Prophet (s): whoever wants his deeds to weigh heavy on the scales should say this, in thanks for Allah's blessings:

Subhāna-llāhi kamā yanbaghī lillāh, wa-l-hamdu lillāhi kamā yanbaghī lillāh

Glory be to Allah as is fitting for Allah, and praise be to Allah as is fitting for Allah

Wa lā ilāha illā-llāhu kamā yanbaghī lillāh, wa lā hawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh

There is no god but Allah as is fitting for Allah, and there is no power nor strength except with Allah

Wa sallā-llāhu ‘alā Muhammadin-in-nabiyyi wa ahli baytihi an-nabiyyi al-‘arabiyyi al-hāshimī

And may Allah bless Muhammad the Prophet and his household, the Arabian, Hashemite Prophet

Wa sallā-llāhu ‘alā jamī‘i al-mursalīna wa-n-nabiyyīna hattā yardhā-llāh

And may Allah bless all the messengers and the prophets until Allah is pleased

A supplication for difficult affairs, narrated from Imam al-Mahdi (a) in Tuhfat al-Ridawiyya, to be said after every obligatory prayer or at any time:

O' He when the affairs has become difficult He opens ways we didn't imagine, so send Your blessing on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, open ways out of my difficulties that I didn't imagine, O' the Most Merciful of the merciful.

From Baqiyat al-Salihat: Allah said to the Prophet (s) that these words are the best means of seeking nearness to Him after the obligatory prayers:

allahumma innahu lam yumsi ahadun min khalqika

O Allah! Indeed, none of Your creatures

anta ilayhi ahsanu sani`an

You have granted more favors,

wa la lahu adwamu karamatan

longer honors,

wa la `alayhi abyanu fadlan

more manifest graces,

wa la bihi ashaddu taraffuqan

more lenient acts,

wa la `alayhi ashaddu hiyatatan

stronger protection,

wa la `alayhi ashaddu ta`attufan

and more compassionate treatment

minka `alayya

than I am,

wa in kana jami`u almakhluqina

although all of Your creatures

yu`addiduna min dhalika mithla ta`didi

can count the same as what I have counted.

fashhad ya kafiya alshshahadati

So, (please) bear witness, O He Whose witness is sufficient to me

bi-anni ushhiduka biniyyati sidqin

that I ask You to bear witness to me with honest intention

bi-anna laka alfadla walttawla

that Yours are all favors and all bounties

fi in`amika `alayya

that have been done to me

ma`a qillati shukri laka fiha

although I have shown You very little gratitude for all that.

ya fa`ila kulli iradatin

O Doer of all wills,

salli `ala muhammadin wa alihi

(please) bless Muhammad and his Household,

wa tawwiqni amanan min hululi alssakhati liqillati alshshukri

surround me with security against the befalling of Your wrath on account of my little gratitude,

wa awjib li ziyadatan min itmami alnni`mati bisa`ati almaghfirati

decide for me more complete graces through expansive forgiveness of You,

amtirni khayraka

and pour down upon me Your good turns.

fasalli `ala muhammadin wa alihi

So, (please) bless Muhammad and his Household

wa la tuqayisni bisu'i sarirati

and do not treat me according to the amount of my ill intention;

wamtahin qalbi liridaka

rather, (please) test my heart in order to win Your pleasure

waj`al ma taqarrabtu bihi ilayka

and make pure that through which I have sought nearness to You

fi dinika laka khalisan

with regard to the affairs of Your religion,

wa la taj`alhu liluzumi shubhatin aw fakhrin aw riya'in

and do not make it to be accompanied by any suspicion, pride, or ostentation.

ya karimu

O All-generous!

Imam al-Sadiq (a) said: whoever says this ten times after the prayer, before moving his knees from their place, Allah erases many of his sins, and it is as if he had recited the whole Qur'an twelve times:

I bear witness that there is no god save Allah, One and Only and having no associate with Him (in Godhead); He is the One God,the Unique, the Besought of all, and He has taken to Himself neither a wife nor a son.

Imam al-Sadiq (a) said the Archangel Gabriel taught this to the Prophet Yusuf (a) in prison, to say after each prayer:

O Allah, cause all my affairs to arrive at a relief and a way out and give me sustenance from whence I expect and from whence I do not expect.

A man complained to the Prophet (s) of illness and poverty, and he taught him to say this after the obligatory prayers:

I put my trust in the Ever-living (Lord) Who never dies. All praise is due to Allah, Who has not taken a wife or a son and Who has not a partner in the kingdom, and Who has not a helper to save Him from disgrace; and magnify Him with all magnificence.

Some narrations put this before it:

There is neither might nor power except with Allah.

Shaykh al-Mufid, in al-Muqni'a, gives this supplication for after every prayer:

O Allah, (please) make us benefit by knowledge, adorn us with forbearance, beautify us with wellbeing, and honor us with piety. Surely, my guardian is Allah, Who revealed the Book, and He guards the righteous ones.
