Amaal for Fulfilment of Needs

1-2 hours (or three days with the recommended fasts)

When: When one has a pressing need and seeks its fulfilment from Allah

Mafatih al-Jinan records a rite for one whose need (hajat) is pressing, narrated from the Ahl al-Bayt (a). The amaal combines fasting (where possible), a special two-rak'at salat, abundant salawat, the Tasbih of Lady Fatima al-Zahra (a), and an extended dua in sajdah. Imam al-Sadiq (a) said: 'When one of you has a need, let him fast on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, then on Friday let him bathe, wear his cleanest clothes, give what he can in charity, and pray two rak'at...' — Allah will not turn him away.

  1. Step 1 · Instruction

Fast Three Days (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) — Optional

Imam al-Sadiq (a) instructed: 'When one of you has a need to be fulfilled by Allah, let him fast Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.'

If health and circumstances permit, fast these three consecutive days as a recommended preparation for the rite. If unable to fast, proceed directly to the salat without fasting; the dua and salat alone are still effective by the grace of Allah.

  2. Step 2 · Instruction

Perform Ghusl, Wear Clean Clothes, and Give Charity

On the day of the rite (preferably Friday) perform a ghusl, wear clean clothes, apply perfume if available, and give whatever charity (sadaqah) you can — even a small amount.

The Holy Prophet (s) said: 'Charity averts a bad death and seventy kinds of calamity.' Sadaqah given before a request softens the heart of the questioner and is a powerful means of acceptance.

  3. Step 3 · Salat

Pray Two Rak'at of Salat al-Hajat

    Pray two rak'at as follows:

    1. Stand facing the qiblah with the intention: 'I pray two rak'at of Salat al-Hajat seeking nearness to Allah, the Exalted.'
    2. Say 'Allahu Akbar' to begin (takbirat al-ihram).
    3. First Rak'at:
    • Recite Surah al-Fatiha once
    • Recite Surah al-Ikhlas (qul huwa Allahu ahad) once
    • Perform ruku' saying 'Subhana Rabbiyal-'Adhimi wa bi-hamdih'
    • Rise saying 'Sami'a-Llahu liman hamidah'
    • Perform two sajdahs saying 'Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la wa bi-hamdih'
    4. Second Rak'at: Repeat as above (Fatiha + Ikhlas).
    5. Sit for tashahhud and salam.

A second variant in Mafatih has Surah Yasin or Surah al-Rahman recited after al-Fatiha in either rak'at; either form is valid.

  4. Step 4 · Dhikr

Recite Tasbih of Lady Fatima al-Zahra (a)

After the salam of the salat, recite the Tasbih of Lady Fatima al-Zahra (a):

    • 'Allahu Akbar' (الله أكبر) — 34 times
    • 'al-hamdu li-Llah' (الحمد لله) — 33 times
    • 'Subhan-Allah' (سبحان الله) — 33 times

The Holy Prophet (s) taught this tasbih to his daughter Fatima (a); it is recommended after every obligatory prayer and is especially emphasised in seeking the fulfilment of needs.

  5. Step 5 · Dhikr · Repeat 100 times

    Recite Salawat 100 Times

Recite the salawat upon Muhammad and his Household 100 times:

    اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

'Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa aali Muhammad'

'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.'

Imam al-Sadiq (a) said: 'No supplication is veiled from Allah; but when salawat is sent upon Muhammad and his family, the supplication is raised and Allah does not turn the servant back disappointed.'

  6. Step 6 · Dua

Fall into Sajdah and Recite the Hajat Invocation

Place your right cheek upon the ground and say 'ya Arham al-Rahimin' (يا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ) — 'O Most Merciful of the merciful' — 100 times.

Then turn your left cheek to the ground and say it 100 times.

Then prostrate upon both cheeks (sajdah) and say 'ya Arham al-Rahimin' 100 times more.

Then, while still in sajdah, mention your need to Allah and recite:

    يَا اللَّهُ يَا اللَّهُ يَا اللَّهُ، يَا رَحْمَانُ يَا رَحِيمُ، يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ، يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ، يَا قَاضِيَ الْحَاجَاتِ، اقْضِ حَاجَتِي.

Transliteration: 'Ya Allahu, ya Allahu, ya Allah; ya Rahmanu ya Rahim; ya Arhama al-Rahimin; ya Dha al-Jalali wa al-Ikram; ya Qadiya al-Hajat; iqdi hajati.'

English: 'O Allah, O Allah, O Allah; O Most Compassionate, O Most Merciful; O Most Merciful of the merciful; O Possessor of Majesty and Bounty; O Fulfiller of needs — fulfil my need.'

Then state your specific need to Allah in your own words.

  7. Step 7 · Instruction

    Persevere with Trust in Allah

After completing the rite, do not despair if the need is not fulfilled immediately. Imam al-Sadiq (a) said: 'A believer asks Allah for a need, but Allah delays its fulfilment because He loves to hear his voice in supplication.'

Repeat the rite on subsequent Fridays if the need persists, continue with sadaqah, salawat, and remembrance of Allah, and keep firm trust (tawakkul) that Allah's response is always either the granting of the request, the warding off of a calamity equal to it, or its storing as reward for the Hereafter.
