أعمال يوم الجمعة

Friday Day Amaal

3-5 hours (spread across the day)

When: Every Friday (Jumu'ah)

Friday is the master of days in Islamic tradition. The Holy Prophet (s) said: 'Friday is the chief of all days.' Mafatih al-Jinan records numerous recommended acts for the day of Friday, distinct from those of Laylatul Jum'a (Thursday night). This amaal collects the day-of practices: ghusl, ziyarat of the Prophet and the Imams, the Friday Prayer, Dua al-Nudbah, Dua Simat, recitation of Surah al-Kahf, and abundant salawat.

  1. Step 1 · Instruction

    Perform Ghusl of Friday

Perform the ghusl of Friday between dawn (Fajr) and noon (Zuhr); the closer to noon, the better. The Holy Prophet (s) said: 'Whoever performs the ghusl on Friday, all his sins from the previous Friday to this Friday are forgiven.'

Intention (niyyah): 'I perform the ghusl of Friday seeking nearness to Allah, the Exalted.'

Note: The ghusl of Friday does not substitute for wudhu before salat.

  2. Step 2 · Instruction

    Cleanliness, Clean Clothes, and Perfume

It is highly recommended on Friday to:
    • Cut/trim the nails and shorten the moustache before Friday Prayer
    • Wear clean (preferably white) clothes
    • Apply perfume (itr) — the Prophet (s) used to do so on Fridays
    • Brush the teeth (siwak)

Imam al-Sadiq (a) said: 'Whoever takes a bath on Friday, applies perfume, dresses in his best clothes, walks calmly to the mosque, does not step over the necks of people, prays the prescribed prayers, listens attentively to the imam, and does not engage in idle talk — for him is the reward of one year's fasting and standing in worship for every step he takes.'

  3. Step 3 · Dua

    Recite Dua al-Nudbah After Fajr

After the Fajr prayer, recite Dua al-Nudbah — the Lamentation Supplication for the awaited Imam al-Mahdi (a). This dua is recited on the four 'Eids: Fitr, Adha, Ghadir, and every Friday.

The dua expresses longing for Imam al-Mahdi (a), recounts the virtues of the Prophets and the Ahl al-Bayt (a), and beseeches Allah to hasten the reappearance of the Imam.

    Dua Nudba

  4. Step 4 · Ziyarat

Recite the Friday Ziyarat & Salawat upon the Ahl al-Bayt

On Friday morning recite the special ziyarat and salawat addressed to the Holy Prophet (s), Amir al-Mu'minin (a), Lady Fatima al-Zahra (a), and each of the Imams (a), as recorded in Mafatih al-Jinan.

Face the qiblah, send greetings upon the Prophet (s) and his pure family, and seek their intercession.

  5. Step 5 · Salat

Pray the Friday Prayer (Salat al-Jumu'ah)

If the conditions are met, attend the Friday congregational prayer (Salat al-Jumu'ah). It consists of two rak'at preceded by two khutbahs (sermons) by the imam.

    How it is prayed:
    1. Listen attentively to both khutbahs
    2. Pray two rak'at behind the imam
    3. In the first rak'at, after Surah al-Fatiha, the imam recites Surah al-Jumu'ah (62)
    4. In the second rak'at, after al-Fatiha, the imam recites Surah al-Munafiqun (63)
    5. There are two qunut: one in the first rak'at before ruku', one in the second rak'at after ruku'

If Salat al-Jumu'ah cannot be established, pray the regular four-rak'at Zuhr prayer.

It is recommended to recite Surah al-Jumu'ah and Surah al-A'la (or al-Munafiqun) in Zuhr and Asr on Friday.

  6. Step 6 · Quran

    Recite Surah al-Kahf, al-Saff, and al-Jumu'ah

On Friday it is recommended to recite:
    • Surah al-Kahf (Chapter 18) — the Holy Prophet (s) said: 'Whoever recites Surah al-Kahf on Friday is protected from trials until the next Friday.'
    • Surah al-Saff (Chapter 61)
    • Surah al-Jumu'ah (Chapter 62)
    • Surah al-Munafiqun (Chapter 63)
    • Surah al-A'la (Chapter 87)
    • Surah al-Rahman (Chapter 55) — Imam al-Sadiq (a) said: 'Whoever recites Surah al-Rahman on the night or day of Friday and dies that day or night dies as a martyr.'

  7. Step 7 · Dua

    Recite Dua al-Simat at Sunset

Near the end of Friday — in the last hour before sunset — recite Dua al-Simat (also called Dua al-Shabbur). It is one of the most highly emphasized supplications of Friday.

Imam al-Baqir (a) and Imam al-Sadiq (a) recommended this dua for the final hour of Friday, when prayers are answered. It calls upon Allah by His Greatest Names and the means by which the Prophets called upon Him.

  8. Step 8 · Dhikr · Repeat 100 times

Recite Salawat upon Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad

Recite abundantly on Friday the salawat upon the Prophet (s) and his Household (a):

    اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

'Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa aali Muhammad'

'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.'

The Holy Prophet (s) said: 'Increase your salawat upon me on Friday, for it is brought to me on that day.' At minimum, recite it 100 times on Friday.
