## Preface

Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a) used to say the following supplication before he would start reciting the Holy Qur'an

1. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ هَذَا كِتَابُكَ الْمُنْزَلُ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ عَلَى رَسُولِكَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ\
   *allahumma inni ashhadu ann hadha kitabuka almunzalu min \`indika ala rasulika muhammadi bni \`abdillahi salla allahu \`alayhi wa alihi*\
   O Allah I testify that this is the Book revealed by You on Your Messenger Muhammad bin Abdillah, blessings of Allah be on him and on his children;

2. وَ كَلاَمُكَ النَّاطِقُ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّكَ جَعَلْتَهُ هَادِياً مِنْكَ إِلَى خَلْقِكَ وَ حَبْلاً مُتَّصِلاً فِيمَا بَيْنَكَ وَ بَيْنَ عِبَادِكَ\
   *wa kalamuka alnnatiqu \`ala lisani nabiyyika ja\`altahu hadiyan minka ila khalqika wa hablan muttsilan fima baynaka wa bayna \`ibadika*\
   (these are) Your Words, Your Prophet gave tongue to, (whom) You appointed as a Guide for the people, and an uninterrupted closely connected link of protecting friendship between You and Your servants.

3. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي نَشَرْتُ عَهْدَكَ وَ كِتَابَكَ اللَّهُمَّ فَاجْعَلْ نَظَرِي فِيهِ عِبَادَةً وَ قِرَاءَتِي فِيهِ فِكْراً وَ فِكْرِي فِيهِ اعْتِبَاراً\
   *allahumma inni nashartu \`ahdaka wa kitabaka allahumma faj\`al nazary fihi \`ibadatan wa qira‘aty fihi fikran wa fikry fihi a\`tibaran*\
   O Allah I make publicly known Your testament and Your Book. O Allah let me pay full attention to (this) adorable pious work; let me notice and take warning from (this)thoughtful reflection;\<

4. وَ اجْعَلْنِي مِمَّنِ اتَّعَظَ بِبَيَانِ مَوَاعِظِكَ فِيهِ وَ اجْتَنَبَ مَعَاصِيَكَ\
   *waj\`alny mimmn att\`aza bibayani mawa\`izika fihi wajtanaba ma\`asiyaka*\
   let me be one of them who exhort themselves from Your plain warnings and preaching found in this Book, and keep from that which You has made unlawful.

5. وَ لاَ تَطْبَعْ عِنْدَ قِرَاءَتِي عَلَى سَمْعِي وَ لاَ تَجْعَلْ عَلَى بَصَرِي غِشَاوَةً\
   *wa la tatba\` \`inda qira‘aty \`ala sam\`i wa la taj\`al \`ala basary ghishawatan*\
   Do not seal my hearing and do not cover my eyes when I recite (it).

6. وَ لاَ تَجْعَلْ قِرَاءَتِي قِرَاءَةً لاَ تَدَبُّرَ فِيهَا بَلِ اجْعَلْنِي أَتَدَبَّرُ آيَاتِهِ وَ أَحْكَامَهُ آخِذاً بِشَرَائِعِ دِينِكَ\
   *wa la taj\`al qira‘aty qira‘atan la tadabbara fiha bali aj\`alny atadabbru ayatihi wa ahkamahu Learning the laws of my religion*\
   Do not let me recite for the sake of recitation , paying no attention to its meaning, but let me contemplate over its signs and commands, to know and understand the modus operandi of Your religion.

7. وَ لاَ تَجْعَلْ نَظَرِي فِيهِ غَفْلَةً وَ لاَ قِرَاءَتِي هَذَراً إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الرَّءُوفُ الرَّحِيمُ\
   *wa la taj\`al nazary fihi ghaflatan wa la qira‘aty hadharan innaka anta alrra´ufu alrrahimu*\
   Do not let my concentration go slack, nor my recitation be like a delirious monologue. Indeed You are full of pity, Merciful.

8. اللهمَّ رَبَّنَا لَكَ الْحَمْدُ،\
   O Allah! Our Lord! To You belongs all praise.

9. وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ أَنْتَ الْمُتَعَالِي بِالْعِزِّ وَالْكِبْرِيَاءِ،\
   and to You belongs all praise.You are exalted in Your might and supremacy

10. رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ أَنْتَ الْمُكْتَفِي بِعِلْمِكَ،\
   Our Lord, to You belongs all praise!

11. يَا مُنْزِلَ الآيَاتِ وَالذِّكْرِ الْعَظِيمِ،\
   O sender of the signs and the Great Reminder!

12. اللهمَّ أَنْتَ عَلَّمْتَنَا قَبْلَ رَغْبَتِنَا فِي تَعَلُّمِهِ(۱)\
   O Allah! You taught it to us before we could be eager to learn it,

13. اللهمَّ فَإِذَا كَانَ ذَلِكَ مَنّاً مِنْكَ وَفَضْلاً وَجُوداً،\
   O Allah! As such has been Your favour toward us,

14. اللهمَّ فَحَبِّبْ إِلَيْنَا حُسْنَ تِلاوَتِهِ،\
   O Allah, grant us the passion for the charm of its recitation,

15. وَسَبَباً فِي تَأْوِيلِهِ، وَهُدًى فِي تَدْبِيرِهِ وَبَصِيرَةً بِنُورِهِ.\
   the means to interpreting it,guidance in contemplating it,and inner vision through its light.

16. اللهمَّ فَاجْعَلْهُ لَنَا حِصْناً مِنْ عَذَابِكَ وَحِرْزاً مِنْ غَضَبِكَ وَحَاجِزاً عَنْ مَعْصِيَتِكَ وَعِصْمَةً مِنْ سَخَطِكَ وَدَلِيلاً عَلَى طَاعَتِكَ\
   so also, O Allah, make it for us a shield against Your punishment, a bulwark against Your wrath, a safeguard against Your disobedience, a protection from Your displeasure, a guide to Your obedience, and,

17. اللهمَّ إِنَّا نَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشِّقْوَةِ فِي حَمْلِهِ وَالْعَمَى عَنْ عَمَلِهِ(۲)\
   O Allah! We seek Your protection from wretchedness in bearing it, from blindness in practicing it,

18. اللهمَّ احْمِلْ عَنَّا ثِقْلَهُ وَأَوْجِبْ لَنَا أَجْرَهُ وَأَوْزِعْنَا شُكْرَهُ وَاجْعَلْنَا نُرَاعِيهِ وَنَحْفَظُهُ.\
   O Allah! Lighten for us its burden, appoint for us its reward, inspire us to give thanks for it, and enable us to observe it and secure it.

19. اللهمَّ ارْزُقْنَا حَلاوَةً فِي تِلاوَتِهِ، وَنَشَاطاً فِي قِيَامِهِ، (۳)\
   O Allah! Grant us sweetness of its recitation, animation in its performance,

20. وَقُوَّةً فِي اسْتِعْمَالِهِ فِي آنَاءِ اللَّيْلِ وَأَطْرَافِ النَّهَارِ.\
   and strength in putting it into practice in the watches of the night and at the ends of the day.

21. وَأَيْقِظْنَا فِي سَاعَةِ اللَّيْلِ مِنْ رُقَادِ الرَّاقِدِينَ وَنَبِّهْنَا عِنْدَ الأحَايِينِ(٥)\
   and awaken us in the hour of the night from the sleep of the slumberers, and arouse us, at the moments

22. الْوَسْنَانِينَ(۷).\
   from the drowsiness of the drowsy.

23. وَعِبْرَةً عِنْدَ تَرْجِيعِهِ،\
   take lesson from it when consulting it,

24. اللهمَّ إِنَّا نَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ تَخَلُّفِهِ فِي قُلُوبِنَا،\
   O Allah! We seek Your protection from letting it languish in our hearts,

25. وَنَبْذِهِ وَرَاءَ ظُهُورِنَا،\
   and from casting it behind our backs.

26. اللهمَّ انْفَعْنَا بِمَا صَرَفْتَ فِيهِ مِنَ الآيَاتِ وَذَكِّرْنَا بِمَا ضَرَبْتَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْمَثُلاتِ (۸) ،\
   O Allah! Give us the benefit of the signs You have variegated in it, admonish us by the parables You have drawn in it,

27. وَضَاعِفْ لَنَا بِهِ جَزَاءً فِي الْحَسَنَاتِ،\
   double through it our reward of good deeds,

28. وَلَقِّنَا بِهِ الْبُشْرَى بَعْدَ الْمَمَاتِ،\
   and give us good news through it after death!

29. وَطَرِيقاً وَاضِحاً نَسْلُكُ بِهِ إِلَيْكَ و\
   a clear path by which we may travel towards You,

30. فَإِنَّكَ اتَّخَذْتَ بِهِ عَلَيْنَا حُجَّةً قَطَعْتَ بِهِ عُذْرَنَا وَاصْطَنَعْتَ بِهِ عِنْدَنَا نِعْمَةً قَصَرَ عَنْهَا شُكْرُنَا\
   for You have made it an argument against us, whereby You have cut off our excuses, and granted thereby a blessing, for which we can, never thank You enough!

31. حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ بِنَا أَفْضَلَ الأمَلِ\
   thus enabling us to realize our best aspirations.

32. وَنُوراً يَوْمَ الظَّلْمَاءِ يَوْمَ لا أَرْضَ وَلا سَمَاءَ يَوْمَ يُجْزَى كُلُّ سَاعٍ بِمَا سَعَى\
   and a light on the Day of Darkness, the Day when there is neither earth nor sky, the Day when every striver will be recompensed for what he strived for

33. وَفَوْزاً يَوْمَ الْجَزَاءِ مِنْ نَارٍ حَامِيَةٍ قَلِيلَةِ الْبُقْيَاء عَلَى مَنْ بِهَا اصْطَلَى وَبِحَرِّهَا تَلَظَّى،\
   a means of deliverance on the day of retribution from the scorching Fire unsparing to anyone who enters it and is inflamed by its heat

34. للهمَّ ارْزُقْنَا مَنَازِلَ الشُّهَدَاءِ وَعَيْشَ السُّعَدَاءِ وَمُرَافَقَةَ الأنْبِيَاءِ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ.\
   O Allah! Grant us the stations of the martyrs, the life of the felicitous and the company of the prophets. Indeed You hear all supplications!

35. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي قَدْ قَرَأْتُ مَا قَضَيْتَ مِنْ كِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَهُ عَلَى نَبِيِّكَ الصَّادِقِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ رَبَّنَا\
   *allahumma inni qad qara’tu ma qadayta min kitabika alladhy anzaltahu \`ala nabiyyIka alssadiqi salla allahu \`alayhi wa alihi falaka alhamdu rabbana*\
   O Allah I have recited that which You commands from Your Book You revealed to Your truthful Prophet, blessings of Allah be on him and on his children. (All) praise be to our Lord.

36. اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِمَّنْ يُحِلُّ حَلاَلَهُ وَ يُحَرِّمُ حَرَامَهُ وَ يُؤْمِنُ بِمُحْكَمِهِ وَ مُتَشَابِهِهِ\
   O Allah let me be one of those who take to the lawful and keep from the unlawful, accept and show submissionto its clear as well as consimilar commands,

37. وَ اجْعَلْنِي مِمَّنْ تُرْقِيهِ (تُرَقِّيهِ) بِكُلِّ آيَةٍ قَرَأَهَا دَرَجَةً فِي أَعْلَى عِلِّيِّينَ آمِينَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ\
   *waj\`alny mimman turaqqihi bikulli aiyatin qara-aha darajatan fi a\`la \`illiyyina amina rabba al\`alamina*\
   and let me be one of those whom You shall raise and exalt, on account of this recitation, on the high pedestal in the Paradise. Be it so O the Lord of the worlds.

38. ‎اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي قَرَأْتُ مَا قَضَيْتَ لِي مِنْ كِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَهُ عَلَى نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَوَاتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَ رَحْمَتُكَ فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ رَبَّنَا وَ لَكَ الشُّكْرُ وَ الْمِنَّةُ عَلَى مَا قَدَّرْتَ وَ وَفَّقْتَ\
   O’ Allah! I have recited that which You have decreed for me to recite from Your Book which You sent upon Your Prophet Muhammad, may Your prayers and peace be upon him, so then praise belongs to You, our Lord. And gratitude belongs to you because of the power and grace given me.

39. اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ لِي أُنْساً فِي قَبْرِي وَ أُنْساً فِي حَشْرِي وَ أُنْساً فِي نَشْرِي وَ اجْعَلْ لِي بَرَكَةً بِكُلِّ آيَةٍ قَرَأْتُهَا وَ ارْفَعْ لِي بِكُلِّ حَرْفٍ دَرَسْتُهُ دَرَجَةً فِي أَعْلَى عِلِّيِّينَ آمِينَ يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ\
   O God! Make the Quran an instrument of love in my grave and an instrument of love when I am raised up, and raise me for the verses I recited up a stage from the high of the high, Amin, O Lord of all the Worlds.

40. وَ عَلَى أَوْصِيَائِهِمَا الْمُسْتَحْفِظِينَ دِينَكَ الْمُسْتَوْدَعِينَ‏ حَقَّكَ وَ عَلَيْهِمْ أَجْمَعِينَ السَّلَامُ وَ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَ بَرَكَاتُهُ\
   And bless their successors who are the guardian and trustee of the message. Be the peace, God's mercy, and His blessings upon all of them!

41. اللّهُمّ اشْرَحْ بِالقُرْآنِ صَدْرِي،\
   *allahumma ashrah bilqur’ani sadri*\
   O Allah: (please) expand my breast through the Qur'an

42. وَاسْتَعْمِلْ بِالقُرْآنِ بَدَنِي،\
   *wasta\`mil bilqur’ani badani*\
   And use my body for the Qur'an

43. وَنَوّرْ بِالقُرْآنِ بَصَرِي،\
   *wa nawwir bilqur’ani basari*\
   And enlighten my sight by the Qur'an

44. وَأَطْلِقْ بِالقُرْآنِ لِسَانِي،\
   *wa atliq bilqur’ani lisani*\
   And make my tongue eloquent by the Qur'an

45. وَأَعِنّي عَلَيْهِ مَا أَبْقَيْتَنِي\
   *wa a\`inni \`alayhi ma abqaytany*\
   And help me carry out its duty as long as You keep me alive,

46. فَإِنّهُ لا حَوْلَ وَلا قُوّةَ إِلاَّ بِكَ.\
   *fa’innahu la hawla wa la quwwata illa bika*\
   For there is neither power nor might save with You.

47. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ إِخْبَاتَ الْمُخْبِتِينَ وَإِخْلَاصَ الْمُوقِنِينَ وَمُرَافَقَةَ الْأَبْرَارِ وَاسْتِحْقَاقَ حَقَائِقِ الْإِيمَانِ وَالْغَنِيمَةَ مِنْ كُلِّ بِرٍّ وَالسَّلَامَةَ مِنْ كُلِّ إِثْمٍ وَوُجُوبَ رَحْمَتِكَ وَعَزَائِمَ مَغْفِرَتِكَ وَالْفَوْزَ بِالْجَنَّةِ وَالنَّجَاةَ مِنَ النَّارِ\
   *Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem. Allaahummaa Innee As’aluka Ikhbaatal Mukhbiteen Wa Ikhlaaswal Mooqineen Wa Muraafaqatal Abraari Wa Istihqaaq Haqaaikil Eemaani Wal Ghaneemata Min Kulli Birrin Was-Salaamata Min Kulli Ismin Wa Wujooba Rahmatik Wa Azaaima Maghfiratik Wal Fawza Bil Jannati Wa Najaatam-Minan-Naar.*\
   "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah! I ask You for the humility of the humble, the sincerity of the convinced, the companionship of the righteous, the realization of the truths of faith, the attainment of every virtue, safety from every sin, the certainty of Your mercy, the determination of Your forgiveness, success in attaining Paradise, and salvation from the Fire."

48. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ إِخْبَاتَ الْمُخْبِتِينَ وَ إِخْلَاصَ الْمُوقِنِينَ وَ مُرَافَقَةَ الْأَبْرَارِ\
   *Allahumma inni asaluka ikhbattal mukhbitina wa ikhlasal muqinina wa murafaqatal abrar*\
   O God! Surely, I ask You for the humbleness of the humbles, the sincerity of those who are sure, the companionship of the righteous,

49. وَ اسْتِحْقَاقَ حَقَائِقِ الْإِيمَانِ وَ الْغَنِيمَةَ مِنْ كُلِّ بِرٍّ وَ السَّلَامَةَ مِنْ كُلِّ إِثْمٍ\
   *Wastihqaqa haqaiqil imani wal ghanimata min kulli birrin was-salamata min kulli ithm*\
   the merit of receiving the truths of faith, the enjoyment of all goodness, the protection from all sins,

50. وَ وُجُوبَ رَحْمَتِكَ وَ عَزَائِمَ مَغْفِرَتِكَ وَ الْفَوْزَ بِالْجَنَّةِ وَ النَّجَاةَ مِنَ النَّار\
   *Wa wujuba rahmatika wa azaima maghfiratika wal fawza bil jannati wan-najata minan nar*\
   the admittance into Your mercy, the achievement of Your great graces, the salvation and reaching Your paradise and saving from the fire of hell.

51. اَللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْنِىْ بِتَرَكِ مَعَاصِيْكَ اَبَدًا مَا اَبْقَيْتَنِىْ فَارْحَمْنِىْ مِنْ تَكَلُّفِ مَا يَعِنِيْنِىْ وَ ارْزُقْنِىْ حُسْنَ الْمَنْظَرِ فِيْمَا يُرْضِيْكَ عَنِّىْ وَ اَلْزِمُ قَلْبِىْ حِفْظُ كِتَابِكَ كَمَا عَلَّمْتَنِىْ وَ ارْزُقْنِىْ. اَنْ اَتْلُوَهُ عَلَى النَّجْوِ الَّذِيْ يُرْضِيْكَ عَنِّىْ.\
   *Allaahummar h’amnee bitaraki maa’a’s’eeka abadam maa abqaitanee farh’amni min takallufi maa yai’neenee warzuqnee h’usnal manz’ari feemaa yurz”eeka a’nnee walzim qalbee h’ifz’a kitaabika kamaa a’llamtanee warzuqnee wa atluwahu a’lan naj’willadhee yurz”eeka a’nnee.*\
   O Allah bestow upon me Your mercy so that I am away from Your disobedience always, and bestow the grace that I am not involved in unbearable difficulties, and grant me the goodness for deeds which make You happy with me, and make the memorizing of Your book (the Holy Quran) obligatory on me as You have granted me it’s knowledge, and bestow Your grace so that I recite it in the way Your pleasure is gained.

52. اَللَّهُمَّ نَوِّرْ بَصَرِىْ وَ اشْرَحْ بِهِ صَدْرِىْ وَ فَرِّجْ بِهِ قَلْبِىْ وَ اطْلِقْ بِهِ لِسَانِىْ وَ اسْتَعْمِلْ بِهِ بَدَنِىْ وَ قَوِّنِىْ عَلٰى ذَالِكَ وَ اَعِنِّىْ عَلَيْهِ اِنَّهُ لاَ مُعِيْنَ عَلَيْهِ اِلاَّ اَنْتَ لاَ اِلٰهِ اِلاَّ اَنْتَ.\
   *Allaahumma nawwir bas’aree washrah’ bihi s’adree wa farrij bihi qalbee wat’liq bihi lisaanee wasta’mil bihi badanee wa qawwinee a’laa dhaalika wa aa’nnee a’laihi innahu laa mue’e’na a’laihi illaa anta laa ilaaha illaa ant.*\
   Allaahumma nawwir bas’aree washrah’ bihi s’adree wa farrij bihi qalbee wat’liq bihi lisaanee wasta’mil bihi badanee wa qawwinee a’laa dhaalika wa aa’nnee a’laihi innahu laa mue’e’na a’laihi illaa anta laa ilaaha illaa ant.
