## Origin

Supplications on sighting the new moon, narrated from the Prophet (s) and Imam Zayn al-Abidin (a); Mafatih al-Jinan, the first night of Ramadan.

## Preface

When your eyes fall on the new moon, you must not point to it; rather you should turn yourself towards the kiblah, raise both your hands towards the sky, and address the new moon with the following words:

Each line gives the Arabic, then the transliteration in italics, then the English.

1. رَبّي وَرَبّكَ اللّهُ رَبّ العَالَمِينَ.\
   *Rabbī wa-Rabbuka Allāhu Rabbu l-ʿālamīn.*\
   Your and my Lord is Allah; the Lord of the worlds.

2. اللّهُمّ أَهِلّهُ عَلَيْنَا بِالأَمْنِ وَالإيمَانِ\
   *Allāhumma ahillahu ʿalaynā bi-l-amni wa-l-īmān*\
   O Allah: (please do) cause this crescent to carry with it for us security and faith

3. وَالسّلامَةِ وَالإسْلامِ\
   *wa-s-salāmati wa-l-islām*\
   And safety and Islam

4. وَالمُسَارَعَةِ إلَى مَا تُحِبّ وَتَرْضَى.\
   *wa-l-musāraʿati ilā mā tuḥibbu wa-tarḍā.*\
   And expedition to whatever You love and please.

5. اللّهُمّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِي شَهْرِنَا هذَا،\
   *Allāhumma bārik lanā fī shahrinā hādhā,*\
   O Allah: (please do) bless us in this month,

6. وَارْزُقْنَا خَيْرَهُ وَعَوْنَهُ،\
   *wa-rzuqnā khayrahu wa-ʿawnahu,*\
   And confer upon us with its goodness and aid,

7. وَاصْرِفْ عَنَّا ضُرّهُ وَشَرّهُ وَبَلاءَهُ وَفِتْنَتَهُ.\
   *wa-ṣrif ʿannā ḍurrahu wa-sharrahu wa-balāʾahu wa-fitnatahu.*\
   And save us from its harm, evil, ordeals, and sedition.

8. اللّهُمّ قَدْ حَضَرَ شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ\
   *Allāhumma qad ḥaḍara shahru Ramaḍān*\
   O Allah: the month of Ramadan has commenced,

9. وَقَدِ افْتَرضْتَ عَلَيْنَا صِيَامَهُ،\
   *wa-qadi ftaraḍta ʿalaynā ṣiyāmah,*\
   And You have made obligatory upon us to observe fasting during it,

10. وَأَنْزَلْتَ فِيهِ القُرْآنَ\
   *wa-anzalta fīhi l-Qurʾān*\
   And You revealed the Qur'an in it,

11. هُدَىً لِلنَّاسِ وَبَيّنَاتٍ مِنَ الهُدَى وَالفُرْقَانِ.\
   *hudan li-n-nāsi wa-bayyinātin mina l-hudā wa-l-furqān.*\
   As guidance for people and clear proofs of true guidance and distinction (between the right and the wrong).

12. اللّهُمّ أَعِنَّا عَلَى صِيَامِهِ،\
   *Allāhumma aʿinnā ʿalā ṣiyāmih,*\
   O Allah: (please) help us observe fasting in it,

13. وَتَقَبّلْهُ مِنَّا،\
   *wa-taqabbalhu minnā,*\
   And accept it from us,

14. وَسَلّمْنَا فِيهِ،\
   *wa-sallimnā fīh,*\
   And keep us safe during it,

15. وَسَلّمْنَا مِنْهُ،\
   *wa-sallimnā minh,*\
   And help us observe it adequately,

16. وَسَلّمْهُ لَنَا فِي يُسْرٍ مِنْكَ وَعَافِيَةٍ،\
   *wa-sallimhu lanā fī yusrin minka wa-ʿāfiyah,*\
   And keep it sound for us with easiness and good health from You.

17. إنّكَ عَلَى كُلّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ،\
   *Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr,*\
   You indeed have power over all things.

18. يَا رَحْمنُ يَا رَحِيمُ.\
   *Yā Raḥmānu yā Raḥīm.*\
   O the All-beneficent, O the All-merciful

19. اللّهُمّ أَهِلّهُ عَلَيْنَا بِالأَمْنِ وَالإيمَانِ\
   *Allāhumma ahillahu ʿalaynā bi-l-amni wa-l-īmān*\
   O Allah: (please do) cause this crescent to carry with it for us security and faith

20. وَالسّلامَةِ وَالإسْلامِ\
   *wa-s-salāmati wa-l-islām*\
   And safety and Islam

21. وَالعَافِيَةِ المُجَلّلَةِ وَدِفَاعِ الأَسْقَامِ\
   *wa-l-ʿāfiyati l-mujallalah wa-difāʿi l-asqām*\
   And encompassing good health and repulsion of ailments,

22. وَالعَوْنِ عَلَى الصّلاةِ وَالصّيَامِ وَالقِيَامِ\
   *wa-l-ʿawni ʿalā ṣ-ṣalāti wa-ṣ-ṣiyāmi wa-l-qiyām*\
   And assistance on praying, observing fasting, and doing acts of worship,

23. وَتِلاوَةِ القُرْآنِ.\
   *wa-tilāwati l-Qurʾān.*\
   And on reciting the Qur'an.

24. اللّهُمّ سَلّمْنَا لِشَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ،\
   *Allāhumma sallimnā li-shahri Ramaḍān,*\
   O Allah: (please do) keep us sound for the month of Ramadan,

25. وَتَسَلّمْهُ مِنَّا،\
   *wa-tasallamhu minnā,*\
   And accept our deeds during it,

26. وَسَلّمْنَا فِيهِ\
   *wa-sallimnā fīh*\
   And save us during it,

27. حَتَّى يَنْقَضِيَ عَنَّا شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ\
   *ḥattā yanqaḍiya ʿannā shahru Ramaḍān*\
   Until the month of Ramadan will not elapse

28. وَقَدْ عَفَوْتَ عَنَّا وَغَفَرْتَ لَنَا وَرَحِمْتَنَا.\
   *wa-qad ʿafawta ʿannā wa-ghafarta lanā wa-raḥimtanā.*\
   Except that You have pardoned us, forgiven us, and had mercy upon us

29. أَيّهَا الخَلْقُ المُطِيعُ،\
   *Ayyuha l-khalqu l-muṭīʿ,*\
   O obedient creature,

30. الدَّائِبُ السّرِيعُ،\
   *Ad-dāʾibu s-sarīʿ,*\
   speedy and untiring,

31. المُتَرَدّدُ فِي مَنَازِلِ التّقْدِيرِ،\
   *Al-mutaraddidu fī manāzili t-taqdīr,*\
   frequenter of the mansions of determination,

32. المُتَصَرّفُ فِي فَلَكِ التّدْبِيرِ،\
   *Al-mutaṣarrifu fī falaki t-tadbīr,*\
   moving about in the sphere of governance!

33. آمَنْتُ بِمَنْ نَوّرَ بِكَ الظّلَمَ،\
   *Āmantu bi-man nawwara bika ẓ-ẓulam,*\
   I have faith in Him Who lights up darknesses through you,

34. وَأَوْضَحَ بِكَ البُهَمَ،\
   *Wa-awḍaḥa bika l-buham,*\
   illuminates jet-black shadows by you,

35. وَجَعَلَكَ آيَةً مِنْ آيَاتِ مُلْكِهِ،\
   *Wa-jaʿalaka āyatan min āyāti mulkih,*\
   appointed you one of the signs of His kingdom

36. وَعَلامَةً مِنْ عَلامَاتِ سُلْطَانِهِ،\
   *Wa-ʿalāmatan min ʿalāmāti sulṭānih,*\
   And one of the marks of His authority,

37. فَحَدّ بِكَ الزّمَانَ،\
   *Fa-ḥadda bika z-zamān,*\
   So, He identified time through You,

38. وَامْتَهَنَكَ بِالكَمَالِ وَالنّقْصَانِ،\
   *Wa-mtahanaka bi-l-kamāli wa-n-nuqṣān,*\
   And humbled you through increase and decrease,

39. وَالطّلُوعِ وَالأُفُولِ\
   *Wa-ṭ-ṭulūʿi wa-l-ufūl*\
   And rising and setting,

40. وَالإنَارَةِ وَالكُسُوفِ\
   *Wa-l-inārati wa-l-kusūf*\
   And illumination and eclipse.

41. فِي كُلّ ذلِكَ أَنْتَ لَهُ مُطِيعٌ،\
   *Fī kulli dhālika anta lahu muṭīʿ,*\
   In all of this you are obedient to Him,

42. وَإلَى إرَادَتِهِ سَرِيعٌ،\
   *Wa-ilā irādatihi sarīʿ,*\
   And prompt toward His will.

43. سُبْحَانَهُ مَا أَعْجَبَ مَا دَبّرَ مِنْ أَمْرِكَ!\
   *Subḥānahu mā aʿjaba mā dabbara min amrik!*\
   Glory be to Him! How wonderful is what He has arranged in Your situation!

44. وَأَلْطَفَ مَا صَنَعَ فِي شَأْنِكَ!\
   *Wa-alṭafa mā ṣanaʿa fī shaʾnik!*\
   How subtle what He has made for Your task!

45. جَعَلَكَ مِفْتَاحَ شَهْرٍ حَادِثٍ لأَمْرٍ حَادِثٍ،\
   *Jaʿalaka miftāḥa shahrin ḥādithin li-amrin ḥādith,*\
   He has made You the key to a new month for a new situation.

46. فَأَسْأَلُ اللّهَ رَبّي وَرَبّكَ،\
   *Fa-asʾalu Allāha Rabbī wa-Rabbak,*\
   So I ask Allah, my Lord and Your Lord,

47. وَخَالِقِي وَخَالِقَكَ،\
   *Wa-Khāliqī wa-Khāliqak,*\
   my Creator and Your Creator,

48. وَمُقَدّرِي وَمُقَدّرَكَ،\
   *Wa-Muqaddirī wa-Muqaddirak,*\
   my Determiner and Your Determiner,

49. وَمُصَوّرِي وَمُصَوّرَكَ\
   *Wa-Muṣawwirī wa-Muṣawwirak*\
   my Form-giver and Your Form-giver,

50. أَنْ يُصَلّيَ عَلَى مُحَمّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمّدٍ،\
   *An yuṣalliya ʿalā Muḥammadin wa-Āli Muḥammad,*\
   that He bless Muhammad and his Household

51. وَأَنْ يَجْعَلَكَ هِلالَ بَرَكَةٍ لا تَمْحَقُهَا الأَيَّامُ،\
   *Wa-an yajʿalaka hilāla barakatin lā tamḥaquha l-ayyām,*\
   and appoint You a crescent of blessings not effaced by days

52. وَطَهَارَةٍ لا تُدَنّسُهَا الآثَامُ،\
   *Wa-ṭahāratin lā tudannisuhā l-āthām,*\
   and of purity not defiled by sins;

53. هِلالَ أَمْنٍ مِنَ الآفَاتِ،\
   *Hilāla amnin mina l-āfāt,*\
   a crescent of security from blights

54. وَسَلامَةٍ مِنَ السّيّئَاتِ،\
   *Wa-salāmatin mina s-sayyiʾāt,*\
   and of safety from evil deeds;

55. هِلالَ سَعْدٍ لا نَحْسَ فِيهِ،\
   *Hilāla saʿdin lā naḥsa fīh,*\
   a crescent of auspiciousness containing no misfortune,

56. وَيُمْنٍ لا نَكَدَ مَعَهُ،\
   *Wa-yumnin lā nakada maʿah,*\
   of prosperity accompanied by no adversity,

57. وَيُسْرٍ لا يُمَازِجُهُ عُسْرٌ،\
   *Wa-yusrin lā yumāzijuhu ʿusr,*\
   of ease not mixed with difficulty,

58. وَخيْرٍ لا يَشُوبُهُ شَرّ،\
   *Wa-khayrin lā yashūbuhu sharr,*\
   of good unstained by evil;

59. هِلالَ أَمْنٍ وَإيمَانٍ،\
   *Hilāla amnin wa-īmān,*\
   a crescent of security and faith,

60. وَنِعْمَةٍ وَإحْسَانٍ،\
   *Wa-niʿmatin wa-iḥsān,*\
   favor and good-doing,

61. وَسَلامَةٍ وَإسْلامٍ.\
   *Wa-salāmatin wa-islām.*\
   safety and submission!

62. اللّهُمّ صَلّ عَلَى مُحَمّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمّدٍ\
   *Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin wa-Āli Muḥammad*\
   O Allah, bless Muhammad and his Household,

63. وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنْ أَرْضَى مَنْ طَلَعَ عَلَيْهِ،\
   *Wa-jʿalnā min arḍā man ṭalaʿa ʿalayh,*\
   place us among the most satisfied of those over whom the crescent has risen,

64. وَأَزْكَى مَنْ نَظَرَ إلَيْهِ،\
   *Wa-azkā man naẓara ilayh,*\
   the pur of those who have looked upon it,

65. وَأَسْعَدَ مَنْ تَعَبّدَ لَكَ فِيهِ،\
   *Wa-asʿada man taʿabbada laka fīh,*\
   the most fortunate of those who have worshiped You under it;

66. وَوَفّقْنَا اللّهُمّ فِيهِ لِلطَّاعَةِ وَالتّوْبَةِ،\
   *Wa-waffiqnā Allāhumma fīhi li-ṭ-ṭāʿati wa-t-tawbah,*\
   give us the success during \[the new month\] to repent,

67. وَاعْصِمْنَا فِيهِ مِنَ الآثَامِ وَالحَوْبَةِ،\
   *Wa-ʿṣimnā fīhi mina l-āthāmi wa-l-ḥawbah,*\
   preserve us within it from misdeeds and exposition to punishment,

68. وَأَوْزِعْنَا فِيهِ شُكْرَ النّعْمَةِ،\
   *Wa-awziʿnā fīhi shukra n-niʿmah,*\
   allot to us within it thanksgiving for Your favor,

69. وَأَلْبِسْنَا فِيهِ جُنَنَ العَافِيَةِ،\
   *Wa-albisnā fīhi junana l-ʿāfiyah,*\
   clothe us during it in the shields of well-being,

70. وَأَتْمِمْ عَلَيْنَا بِاسْتِكْمَالِ طَاعَتِكَ فِيهِ المِنّةَ،\
   *Wa-atmim ʿalaynā bi-stikmāli ṭāʿatika fīhi l-minnah,*\
   and complete for us Your kindness by perfecting therein obedience to You!

71. إنّكَ أَنْتَ المَنَّانُ الحَمِيدُ،\
   *Innaka anta l-Mannānu l-Ḥamīd,*\
   Surely You are All-kind, Praiseworthy.

72. وَصَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَى مُحَمّدٍ وَآلِهِ الطّيّبِينَ،\
   *Wa-ṣallā Allāhu ʿalā Muḥammadin wa-Ālihi ṭ-Ṭayyibīn,*\
   And bless Muhammad and his Household, the good, the pure.

73. وَاجْعَلْ لَنَا فِيهِ عَوْناً مِنْكَ عَلَى مَا نَدَبْتَنَا إلَيْهِ\
   *Wa-jʿal lanā fīhi ʿawnan minka ʿalā mā nadabtanā ilayh*\
   And grant us aid from You to carry out that which You have ordered us to do in it;

74. مِنْ مُفْتَرَضِ طَاعَتِكَ\
   *Min muftaraḍi ṭāʿatik*\
   Such as the obedience to You which You have made incumbent upon us,

75. وَتَقَبّلْهَا إنّكَ الأَكْرَمُ مِنْ كُلّ كَرِيمٍ،\
   *Wa-taqabbalhā innaka l-Akramu min kulli karīm,*\
   and accept them from us, for You are the most Generous of all those who show generosity

76. وَالأَرْحَمُ مِنْ كُلّ رَحِيمٍ،\
   *Wa-l-Arḥamu min kulli raḥīm,*\
   and the most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

77. آمِينَ آمِينَ رَبّ العَالَمِينَ.\
   *Āmīn Āmīn Rabba l-ʿālamīn.*\
   Respond! Respond! O the Lord of the Worlds.

78. رَبُّنَا وَ رَبُّكَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ\
   *Rabbunā wa-Rabbuka Allāhu Rabbu l-ʿālamīn*\
   Our Lord and your Lord is Allah, Lord of the worlds

79. اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ عَلَيْنَا هلالاً مُبَارَكًا،\
   *Allāhumma jʿalhu ʿalaynā hilālan mubārakā,*\
   O Allah make it a blessed crescent for us

80. وَ وَفِّقْنَا لِصِيَامٍ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ،\
   *wa-waffiqnā li-ṣiyāmi shahri Ramaḍān,*\
   and grant us the chance to fast in it

81. وَ وَ سَلِّمُنَا فِيهِ، وَ تَسَلَّمْنَا مِنْهُ،\
   *wa-sallimnā fīhi, wa-tasallamnā minh,*\
   and keep us safe in it and make us receive (good) from it

82. فِي يُسْرٍ وَ عَافِيَةٍ،\
   *fī yusrin wa-ʿāfiyah,*\
   in ease and health

83. وَ اسْتَعْمِلُنَا فِيهِ بِطَاعَتِكَ،\
   *wa-staʿmilnā fīhi bi-ṭāʿatik,*\
   and use us in it for Your obedience

84. إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ\
   *Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr.*\
   surely You have power over all things
